Efficient Synthesis of Anti-depressant Agent Agomelatine

Abstract: A simple and efficient synthesis of anti-depressant agent Agomelatine has been achieved in 5 steps with an overall yield 63%. The synthesis was started from commercially available starting material, ethyl-2(7-methoxynaphthalen-1-yl)-acetate (2). All the reactions are very clean and yield excellent.
