Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition that can lead to significant disability and joint pain. Various studies have found that RA itself as well as the drugs used in its management (particularly immunosuppressants and steroids) may lead to serious infections (SI). Serious infections maybe defined as an infection that requires hospitalization with or without IV antibiotics or leading to significant disability/incapacity [1]. Many trials have shown that biological agents significantly control signs and symptoms, slow progression and improve function and quality of life of patients with early or long-standing RA [2]. However, biological agents also play an important role in host defense and may be associated with increased risk of serious infections (SI) [3-7].
