Abstract:
This paper analyses the offsetting effects of the Delalande tax, a measure introduced in 1987 in France to discourage firms from laying older workers off. The model predicts a reduction of the average unemployment rate among workers over 50 years old. Even though unemployment increases in the 50-54 age range that is not protected by the tax, this is more than offset by the sharp decrease of unemployment over 55
