Comment on 'Emergence and Resilience of Social Networks' by Fernando Vega-Redondo

Abstract: The study of complex networks is one of the mort exciting recent developments in network theory. Drawing from different fields, like game theory, statistical physics, epidemiology and sociology, this is truly an inter-disciplinary venture, with applications ranging from public health to economics or social sciences in general. The basic idea is that large social networks are very complicated objects, which are best analyzed using the tools developed to study systems of particles in statistical physics. The new insights gained by this approach complement the recent economic theory of network formation (see JACKSON [2005] and GOYAL [2007]).
