The Labor Supply of Mothers of Children with Austism Spectrum Disorder: An Analysis of Survey Data

Abstract: This article is the first in France to use survey data to analyze the labor supply of mothers who have a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The probability of being employed and the number of hours worked are estimated using a two-stage model. Among mothers with children with autism, 35.31\% were unemployed, and those who were employed worked an average of 25 hours per week. Maternal labor supply varied according to the severity of the child's ASD, the presence or absence of epilepsy, and the availability of home care and emotional support. The effect of the availability of institutional care was also examined. Variables traditionally found to influence maternal labor supply also remained significant. The employment status of mothers of autistic children depends on the symptoms of the disorder and the availability of care and support.
