The Role of Firm Pensions for Job Change in Germany

Abstract: This paper studies the role of occupational pensions for voluntary job mobility in Germany. The analysis is based on individual data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) for the period 1995-1998. We estimate the effects of pension portability loss on voluntary job changes using a sample selection model with bootstrapping. The main findings are that occupational pension coverage reduces worker mobility by imposing a capital loss on those leaving their job before retirement age. A higher compensation in pension-covered jobs is important too.
