Abstract:
This article analyzes which graduates of the German dual apprenticeship system subsequently have a high employment stability and hence a successful start in their employment careers. Using parametric event history analysis, our estimates show a high correlation between employment duration and the general and occupational specific human capital: The higher the school education and the better the grade of the dual apprenticeship, the longer the first employment period. We also find evidence that the occupational choice and the working conditions in training firms have a positive impact on employment duration. However, if graduates with low general human capital complete apprenticeship training in an occupation with a relatively high average level of general human capital, despite distinct selection and segregation mechanisms in the transition from school to the apprenticeship training, they have only minor disadvantages with respect to stable employment compared to graduates with high general human capital.
