Abstract:
The article discusses the importance of data analytics in modern industrial systems and their role in unlocking novel groundbreaking opportunities in the power grid sector. The information layer is now added to the conventional electricity transmission and distribution network for data collection, storage, and analysis with the help of wide installation of smart meters and sensors. The article highlights the untapped potential of applying the science of big data for better planning and operation of the power grid, which is a challenging task that needs significant efforts. The article concludes that as power grid technologies evolve in conjunction with measurement and communication technologies, this results in an unprecedented amount of heterogeneous big data sets from diverse sources.
