Abstract: In the last ten years, Nigeria has shown some commitments to becoming self-suffi cient in rice production. Th e country’s rising import bills of over $US1billion per annum on rice has been adduced to several factors. Th is article reviews empirical literature on rice studies, identifi ed the key underlying factors responsible for the domestic demandsupply gap and high rice import bills for in Nigeria. Implications for the development of Nigeria’s rice sector were discussed.
