Review of Development Finance Journal, 2025, vol. 15, issue 1, 26-36

Abstract: This study examines the developmental trajectories of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) research in finance and banking, addressing gaps in prior reviews. Using the Girvan-Newman clustering method and main path analysis (MPA), it analyzes 7,748 publications from Web of Science and Scopus. Findings reveal three key stages in financial M&A research and highlight efficiency gains and shareholder value in banking M&A. This study is among the first to use the Girvan-Newman clustering method and MPA to systematically trace M&A research evolution, offering insights into knowledge progression and future research opportunities, enhancing understanding of M&A’s impact in finance and banking.
