Abstract:
After almost a decade of negative growth in GDP per capita, the justness of South Africa’s energy transition will be judged on its implications for broader society as well as for those whose livelihoods depend directly on carbon intensive energy production. Comparing the country’s historical energy supply constraints with other elements of its credit cycle suggests private sector confidence will be key to enabling the broadness of its just transition.
