Abstract: The purpose of this article is to investigate empirically the possible relationship between the availability of firearms and homicides with this instrument in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP). The analysis performed with panel data for the 39 municipalities of the RMSP from 2003 to 2016, through ordinary minimum and square least squares in two stages, changing in the estimations, the proxies for availability of weapons. The variables proportion of suicides with firearms, firearms seizures and illegal prisons are used as proxies for weapons the availability and regardless of the variable choice, the results suggest a positive relationship between the availability of firearms and homicides, indicating that more firearms would lead to more deaths with this instrument.
