Abstract: In Romania, the transition to a market economy has led to a strong crisis due to inability to adapt to the changes that occurred in the Romanian economy. Privatisation and restructuring led to huge layoffs and emergence of unemployment. Over time, unemployment reached normal parameters, which makes us believe that this issue has been adequately treated in the context of socio-economic development of Romania. This paper attempts to highlight the main factors that create imbalance in the labor market in Romania. It also aims to demonstrate that this phenomenon has degrading effects on humans causing lack of motivation in seeking another job and loss of income and production for the society. Using charts shown unemployment developments from 2000 to the present. The paper also presents the structure of unemployment in Romania by region, skill level as well as by gender and age groups.
