Abstract:
This study investigates the macroeconomic impacts of disasters in Türkiye from 1999 to 2023 using ARDL and Impulse Response Functions. Findings reveal that disaster-induced economic losses significantly reduce GDP per capita in both the short and long run. However, a rise in disaster victims appears to stimulate growth due to reconstruction and aid flows. Capital accumulation drives growth, while ODA has a temporary negative effect. Insurance and financial services consistently hamper growth, suggesting weak risk-transfer mechanisms. The study advocates strengthened financial resilience, increased recovery spending, and enhanced international cooperation to mitigate disaster risks and promote sustainable economic stability.
