Risk management for lenders in a post farm program setting

Abstract:
Huntington National Bank has approved and certified status with Farmers Home Administration and is the largest bank user of the link deposit loan program in Ohio. Each agricultural banker is actively seeking more loans, including through the Farmer Mac program. Recently, ag lenders met to discuss portfolio quality and strategy because of the poor start for planting the 1995 crops. Without exception, there was strong sentiment that reduction or even elimination of program payments would result in minimal negative long term effect on the majority of current commercial farm operations.
