1996 Farm Credit System performance

Keith Leggett

American Bankers Association, 1997, vol. 10, issue 3

Abstract: The Farm Credit System (FCS) has rebounded from its credit problems of the 1980s to become a major competitor of banks in supplying credit to the rural US. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that the FCS accounted for more than half of the increase in farm lending in 1996, boosting its share of total farm credit to slightly less than 26%. In 1994, the FCS held a 24% market share. USDA expects that the FCS will continue to expand its share of farm lending in 1997. An overview of the FCS and the trends in its financial performance is presented.
