Abstract:
The US banking system and the associations of the Farm Credit System are the primary suppliers of credit to US farm operators. Based on data collected in USDA's 1999 Agricultural Resource Management Study, commercial banks had a 47% market share and the Farm Credit System had a 20% market share of total farm operator debt at the end of 1999. An analysis explores the distribution of farm debt among different classes of operators and their creditors.
