Abstract:
In the year 2004, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) standardized the regulations for those farms that want to be part of exporting process of livestock products of ovine origin, these regulations are part of the ovine’s livestock production program under official certification (PABCO ovino). The aim of this study is to characterize small-livestock sheep producers in a dryland coastal area in the O’Higgins Region, with the intention of characterizing their fulfilment of the quality protocol, thus establishing their capacity of being part of the ovine meat's exporting chain. Three groups were identified. One of them could soon be part of the exporting chain, because it presents the highest fulfilment levels related to PABCO ovino. Nevertheless, it needs to develop an intervention program in order to reach the minimum incorporation level to PABCO program.
