Distinction, promotion, sélection des agriculteurs sarthois: le rôle des organismes de développement

Économie rurale, 1982, vol. 152
Abstract:
The role of the farm organizations in the french department of the Sarthe - Farm organizations and their extension services have played a crucial role in creating and promoting the «good farmer». A social class of farmers characterized both by their economic and technical dynamism and by new cultural activities has thus been molded. Other strata of the farm population are more reluctant to adopt production methods which upset not only economic and technical habits but also social patterns. This is why further extension of this development model is hampered. Farmers and the extension machinery they direct are overcommitted to the more intensive forms of production. This prevents them from promoting less rigid systems for farmers with other norms and aspirations.
