Croissance et financement des serristes en Loire-Atlantique

Jean-Marie Codron and Patrick Rio

Économie rurale, 1992, vol. 210

Abstract: The region of Loire-Atlantique has a long tradition in vegetable growing. It has built one of the largest areas of glasshouses of the northern half of France. As most of the septentrional european regions, its growth was strongly slowed by the two oil crisis but has been starting again for the past five years. The reason for it is not only the sharp decrease of the oil prices : the reactions to such a decrease are very different from a region of production to another. It's also the way choosed locally to negotiate the crisis. That's one of the main results of a study, held in the region of Loire-Atlantique which consisted in restoring the financial stories of about 200 farms (i.e. almost all the glasshouse vegetable growers of this region) in order to identify the strategies of investment and find out the elements that have been decisive in facing the crisis.
