Abstract:
Costs of dairy production are investigated for herds grouped according to herd size and productive performance. Significant economies of size are found, especially in the use of labour. Optimum herd size is estimated, and it is found that in 1986-7 fewer than 25% of herds had exploited most of their potential economies of size. The implications for dairy policy are discussed.
