Storage deficit for agricultural production in Tocantins

Rafael Alves da Silva and Flavio Carlos Dalchiavon

Revista IPecege, 2018, vol. 4, issue 1

Abstract: Tocantins is a major grain producer in the Northern region of Brazil; however, like other important grain-producing regions in the country, it lacks adequate storage infrastructure. This study aimed to compare the historical grain production of Tocantins with the static capacity of its warehouses between 1990 and 2017, identifying the municipalities and/or regions with the greatest potential for the installation of new storage facilities. Data on grain production and registered warehouses, both available from the National Supply Company (CONAB), were used as a reference to evaluate the evolution and create maps of the geographical distribution of static capacity and storage deficit. In recent years, Tocantins has become one of the main grain producers in the Northern region of Brazil and still presents great potential for growth. Even with growth in static storage capacity, this has not kept pace with the growth in grain production, which justifies the current storage deficit of approximately 2,512,305 tons, representing 57.97% of the state's total grain production. The regions or municipalities with the greatest deficits in static capacity and, consequently, the best opportunities for new storage facilities are: Porto Nacional, Campos Lindos, Dianópolis, Lagoa da Confusão, Peixe, Caseara, Gurupi, Goiatins, Pium, and Miracema do Tocantins.
