A Comparative Study of Commuting Choice in Urban and Rural Areas: Application of Conditional Logit Model

Abstract: The present study investigates a commuting choice behavior in urban and rural areas. The present study utilizes the Korean Census data 2% sample to compare commuting choice of the people in urban and rural areas. We apply a conditional logit model to investigate the regional differences between urban and rural area. We found that (1)the demand of public transit exceeds the supply in rural areas (2)preference of motorcar for commuting increased in urban and rural areas, especially in rural areas in 2000. The present study draws an implication of the importance of incorporating commuting time on individual's mode choice behavior, which has not been utilized before. The present study shows that dramatic changes have been noticed in transportation behavior for rural residents between 1990 and 2000. This study concludes with summarizing the results and suggestions for some future studies.
