Abstract:
On the background of legal regulations amendments in Poland and the European Union the changes in the development of the sector of liquid biofuels in the years 2005-2014 were presented. The requirements of the Directive 2009/28 / EC on the sustainable production of biofuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions were analyzed. The limits of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions were presented. These limitations may be introduced due to a possible obligation to include additional emissions associated with the so called indirect land use change and possible further development of biofuels for transport. The sector of liquid biofuels has been progressively developing since 2005 year. An increasing number of diesel vehicles contributes to a more dynamic development of biodiesel production. Meeting the criterion of bioethanol sustainable production and reduction of GHG emissions > 50% requires cultivating wheat and maize under reduced tillage; whereas rapeseed for biodiesel production should come from cultivation without plowing. More difficulties in meeting the criteria of Directive 2009/28/EC are caused by a possible need to include additional emissions associated with indirect land use after 2020. Therefore the production of higher generations of biofuels is getting more important.
