Abstract: It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to write about Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, who was not only an outstanding scientist, but also one who did his best to provide a bridge between the laboratory and the field. In this process, he transformed Indian agriculture. Thanks to him India ceased to be a land of food scarcity.
