GMO- TWO DECADES AFTER THE FIRST COMMERCIALISATION

Abstract: Regarding transgenic plants growth and food derived from genetically modified organisms (GMO) there is a large disagreement about its environmental and health adverse effects as well as about socio-economic implications. In the spirit of the general debate which is not slowing down, in this work we have analysed some indicators and consequences of the transgenic technology diffusion. Our work showed that biotechnology industry successfully recovered from 2008 recession, even the industry for the first time operated without losses, Also, it has been shown that the economic crisis contributed to the further strengthening of the monopoly power of the biggest companies. Bearing in mind, technological underdevelopment as well as fact that small companies collapsed during the crisis it is clear that Serbia cannot compete with multinationals at the biotech market.
