Cooperative Banks, and more specifically Rural Banks, traditionally linked to the agrarian sector, operate in a strongly competitive environment, where the <> and the traditional loyalty of its customers are less and less assured. As cooperatives, they are expected to fulfill a series of social aims, clearly established at a legislative and statutory level, socially recognized. Nevertheless, as financial institutions, they must operate in an environment where the search of profitability is mandatory as route of creation of value and service, based on suitable levels of solvency. This will analyze, on the one hand, the participation of the agrarian sector in the business model of Credit Cooperatives, comparatively with the situations in Banks and Savings Banks, and on other one, the weight that the Credit Cooperatives have in the financing to the different productive sectors, and more concretely the agrarian sector, with regard to the remaining financial institutions. The current situation of crisis has driven the internal debate in the sector of the Credit Cooperatives, on the need of a rethinking of his business model.
