Abstract:
The general aim of this article is to analyze the market possibilities of two traditional varieties of tomato from Alicante, Muchamiel and De la Pera, which have been genetically improved. For this purpose, we compare the willingness to pay (WTP) for these varieties with the WTP for the same varieties without genetic improvement, that is, those which are currently marketed. We try to determine if consumers perceive organoleptic differences between both types of varieties, through the analysis of the differences in the willingness to pay for them. To accomplish this aim, an experimental nth-price auction has been used in which 102 tomato purchasers participated. Results show that there are not big differences between the willingness to pay for the improved and not improved varieties, so the substitution in markets of the current varieties by the improved varieties could be done without risks for their commercialization.
