Motives for Mergers in Food Retailing

Abstract: A leading cause of growth by large retailing chains since their appearance in the 1920's has been merger with and acquisition of other food retailers. Federal laws were enacted as early as 1890 to prohibit mergers which could lead to abuse of market power. Today, merger activity continues to be the subject of public scrutiny.
