Recent Recession Altered Unemployment Patterns

Abstract:
Two longstanding unemployment patterns were reversed in the 1980-82 recession. The nonmetro unemployment rate exceeded the metro rate and men's unemployment rate exceeded women's. The two reversals resulted primarily from changes in the labor force in recent years: the shift to a service economy, the expansion of women's role in the work place, and changes in women's working patterns.
