Abstract: We can better judge how the nonmetro economy will perform in the future if we first understand how it has performed in the past. Therefore, before we present our employment growth projections for the 1980's, we will review employment growth in the Nation's rural and smalltown communities, focusing on two periods, 1940-70 and 1970-80.
