Changes in Age Structure and Rural Community Growth

David A. McGranahan

Rural America/ Rural Development Perspectives, 1985, vol. 01, issue 3

Abstract: Rural community growth is an uneven process. First, the population changes as a result of migration into and out of the community. This change has proven not only uneven but also unpredictable. In 1969, a panel of rural experts wrote of “The People Left Behind,” and how the rural community would have to cope with continued decline. Less than 10 years later, experts were writing of the “rural renaissance” and of the problems of boomtowns.
