Unemployment Trends Show Economic Recovery for Some Rural Areas; Little Improvement for Others

Abstract: Rural areas are now making an economic comeback after the soaring unemployment rates and stagnant job growth of the early 1980's. Annual average unemployment levels in nonmetro areas have consistently declined since 1985, and in 1988, for the first time, nonmetro employment growth began to exceed that of metro areas. However, improvements in the economy have not occurred equally across all nonmetro areas. Unemployment in some rural counties has risen since the early 1980’s, and many nonmetro areas continue to experience relatively high levels.
