Service Sector Offers More Jobs, Lower Pay

Shirley Porterfield

Rural America/ Rural Development Perspectives, 1990, vol. 06, issue 3

Abstract: The shift in employment from manufacturing to services in 1981-86 slowed the increase in the level of average annual pay of U.S. nonagricultural workers. The distribution of jobs among industries in the nonmetro job market changed more than those in the metro job market, resulting in a slower increase in annual pay for nonmetro workers.
