Small Communities in the Northwestern United States Also Declining

Glenn V. Fuguitt

Rural America/ Rural Development Perspectives, 1994, vol. 09, issue 2

Abstract: Small communities in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho experienced population trends very similar to those in Saskatchewan. Metro counties grew faster than nonmetro, except during the rural turnaround of the 1970's. Nonmetro counties containing larger communities grew during all four decades, 1950-90, while counties containing smaller communities lost population except during the turnaround.
