Abstract: In this paper we evaluate the main causes and consequences of bank failures. Starting from the theoretical level and identifying traditional and modern causes, common and specific causes for bank failures, we continue with an analysis of the Romanian case. The Romanian banking system had several major problems, concentrated between the two World Wars and in the nineties, on different economic backgrounds.
