Evaluating the HR practices used in the healthcare industry, The case of a tertiary hospital in Greece

Abstract: The scope of this paper is the evaluation of HRM practices in the health sector, particularly in ‘NIMTS’ Hospital. Τhe significance and originality of the research comes from the fact that the problem was considered not through theoretical models but through practical investigation of workers’ perceptions about the HRM practices. To fulfil this purpose primary research using and a structured questionnaire was conducted. The final sample was 206 health professionals. According to the main results of the research employee attitudes regarding the HRM practices are not positive. The survey also showed that the demographic characteristics such as gender, age, education, marital status and years of experiences do not influence the perceptions of employees’ about HRM practices. Statistically significant differences in the responses were depending on the specialty. Doctors in training, technology staff and nurses have more negative views, from specialized doctors and administrative staff. Also, we proved that there are differences in the views of employees about the HRM practices relating to the possibility for involvement, depending on the position which the respondents have in the hospital. So, supervisors and trainee specialists maintain a more negative attitude, while employees and consultants have more moderate attitude. Finally, the present research proved that there is statistical positive relationship between employees’ perceptions about HRM practices and job satisfaction and organizational commitment.
