Determinants of youth unemployment spells and exit destinations in Romania and Hungary

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse determinants which cause some young Romanian and Hungarian individuals to have longer unemployment spells than others and different exit destinations. The empirical analysis is based on two large micro-datasets, obtained from the National Agency of Employment Romania and the Institute of Economics, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Based on the competing risks specification, conclusions and suggestions for policy-makers are formulated.

Note: The empirical analysis of this study was carried out during my postdoctoral stage. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisors, who gave me continuous and most appreciated guidance. For Hungary, the administrative dataset of unemployment benefit recipients was created by the Institute of Economics, Research Centre for Economic and Regional Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA KRTK KTI) from the raw data provided by the National Employment Service, Budapest, Hungary. Although the MTA KRTK KTI made efforts to clean the data, it cannot be held liable for any remaining error.
