Abstract: The authors presented in the collection discuss the changes in the organization of scientific research, the geography of innovation, the structure of research institutions and linkages between science and innovation. In the “Globalization of R&D: China, India, and the Rise of International Co-invention” Lee Branstetter, Guangwei Li, and Francisco Veloso demonstrate surprising trends in the high-tech sectors of the two largest economics of the Old World, which do not correlate with traditional concepts of economic growth and technological progress. Ajay Agrawal, John McHale and Alexander Oettl in the “Collaboration, Stars, and the Changing Organization of Science: Evidence from Evolutionary Biology” explore the growth rates of scientific products of individual researchers against a background of the proportional fall of productivity in scientific institutions. The article "Laboratories of Democracy: Experiments in the State Policy of the States" by Maryann Feldman and Lauren Lanigan is devoted to the analysis of various government programs implemented over the past 30 years in the US states with one common goal - to stimulate economic growth by influencing academic science.
