Abstract:
The study identifies the features of Japan’s policy regarding its participation in regional trade agreements (RTAs), provides a comparative analysis of the main provisions of the RTAs signed by Japan and assesses the impact of participation in such agreements on Japanese foreign trade.Since the 1960s. Japan’s trade policy has evolved from the principle of multilateral trade liberalization in the framework of GATT and APEC to trade liberalization within the framework of the RTAs. The Japanese practice of participation in regional trade agreements has contributed mainly to expansion of trade and investments. At the same time, the formation of RTAs entails certain costs, especially for the raw material industry, agriculture and employment.
