Konstantin Vladimirovich Kholopov and Olga Vladimirovna Sokolova

Russian Foreign Economic Journal, 2020, issue 10, 18-27

Abstract: The authors determine the major reasons for the requirements to develop the Northern sea route (NSR) as an international transport corridor linking the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other goods from the Arctic fields of Russia to the European and Asian markets; they also present the key indicators of LNG production in Russia and in the world as well as the relationship between LNG supplies and the level of development of the Arctic transport and logistics system. The authors identify the extent of the Northern sea route regulation and governance with the main principles and indicators. Besides, the conditions for the NSR to become a public international transport corridor are determined. The problems hindering the growth of LNG supplies along the Northern sea route and the measures taken by the government and business to eliminate them are indicated. The synergy between the development of the NSR and the volumes and efficiency of LNG export supplies is revealed.
