Abstract: The article examines the current trends and opportunities to increase Russian exports by establishing modern forms of trade used in the world. Th e role and functions of commodity exchanges in the energy markets – thermal coal – in terms of their transition to competitive pricing are outlined. Market mechanisms that could help to reduce the key risks for the coal industry are considered. The prospects of exchange trading in coal futures are highlighted.
