NATIONALISM AS A DISCOURSE

Abstract: This study aims to examine nationalism as a discourse that construct a stratified and hierarchical integration model rather than an ideology that distorts,conceals or legitimizes social inequalities. It can be said that nationalism construct a form of organization aligned with concept of modern governance that aims at transforming social inequalities into a source of national identity, national superiority and national power. Nationalism defines ethnical, class, racist and sexist distictions as founding elements of national integration process that structures them in line with uniform society ideal. However, these distinctions tend to only blur differentiation between real and “fake†citiziens. As a matter of fact, construction of egelatarian and homogenous society is a reflection of egelatarianism of national state rather than a result of deceiving, quelling or concealing activity. In this study, political function shaplessness of nationalism that constititus a basis for egelitarian and uniform applications of national state is focused. It is concluded that nationalism can provide stability for class structure only by articulating it with racist and sexist discourses according to the examination of this political function.
