The Influence of Globalization on International News- An Evaluation of the Post-Cold WarPeriod

Abstract: Today international news coverage is becoming a reflection and a constituent of global system as the importance of world economy, polity and culture increases in the fram- ing of this coverage. The study aims to evaluate the developments, which become visible around the centrality of this framing process, in terms of the specific conditions of the post- Cold War period. The first of these developments is the increasing depolitization of interna- tional news in the level of developed, less developed and newly industrialized countries with a main focus on events rather than performing processes. The only exception is the propa- gandist activites between Western and Islamic countries which intensified with the attacks of 11th September. Second development is the increasing influence of international econom- ic news as a result of worldwide economic developments extending so as to comprise polit- ical and cultural aspects with a concomitant trend of a powerful determinism. Third devel- opment is the dominance of localizing processes which aim to make international news meet with a wider range of audiences. The effects of “glocalization†on the construction of inter- national news as an intersection of the global and the local, the practices of news “domes- tication†aiming to structure international events within the context of domestic details and, to some extent, the nation-states’efforts of international news control to protect national/cul- tural identity can be examined within this framework. As a conclusion, it is possible to claim that international news is being popularized and limited with narrow definitions in the same way as media systems are centralized and homogenized.
