Does the Affordable Care Act Affect Preventive Care among Young Adults?

Chongrui Li ()

International Journal of Asian Social Science, 2019, vol. 9, issue 10, 525-534

Abstract: In this paper, I mainly focus on a provision in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and this provision is that dependents whose age is up to 26 can be covered by their parents’ health insurance. On the basis of this provision in the ACA, I put forward my research question, which is whether the Affordable Care Act affects preventive care among young adults? To examine the research question, I choose Linear Probability Model within difference in difference as my main method. However, in the model regression, the coefficients of the interaction terms on flu shot and HIV Test are statistically insignificant, the results imply that the ACA does not affect the use of flu shot and HIV Test among young adults. As a common preventive care, the using of flu shot increases year by year, and it means young adults gradually raise healthy awareness. The using of HIV Test decreases year by year. Perhaps, HIV Test is not a common preventive care, and it is just for young adults who really need to take HIV Test.
