Abstract: Transportations are one of the success-keys for achieving the Single European Market because they contribute to rendering concrete two of the fundamental objectives of the latter: free movement of persons and of goods. The new technologies developed for vehicles and traffic management shall be essential in diminishing the emissions caused by transportation both within the European Union and in the rest of the world. The race for sustainable mobility has worldwide amplitude. The delayed action and modest implementation of the new technologies could condemn the transportation industry within the European Union to an irreversible decline. The transportation sector within the EU is faced with increasing acerbic competition on the transportation world markets which are in a process of swift development. The present paper intends to make a brief presentation of the new information and telecommunication technologies implemented in the Romanian railways transportation, as well as an analysis of the economic and social impact of their implementation.
