Abstract: This paper offers a descriptive analysis of the effect that the appointment of Matera as European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2019, exerted on tourist flows, and other economic indicators. The analysis compares Matera, before and after its appointment in 2014, with the other 19 candidate cities. The outcomes show that visitors’ flows, tourist services and employment increased significantly in Matera, in the period after its appointment as ECoC 2019, compared with the previous period and with the other candidate cities. The only variable showing a small, yet positive, comparative performance was per capita value added.
