Gender disparities in career progression in Italian academia: a regional perspective

Abstract:
This paper presents a detailed analysis of gender disparities in career progression within Italian universities from a regional perspective. Using a comprehensive statistical analysis of all scholars enrolled in Italian universities from 2000 to 2023, we assess how and to what extent gender differences persist in achieving full professorship across scientific fields and regions. Our findings highlight the persistence of gender disparities and the extent of the glass ceiling effect in academia, providing a data-driven overview of the difficulties faced by women in advancing to senior academic positions.
