Abstract: The problem of tourism demand cycles, though present in the papers of foreign scholars, has not been dealt with elaborately by the Croatian academic community. Accordingly, the main goal of this paper is to introduce the problem of tourism demand cycles into Croatian scientific literature. On the one hand, this paper represents a brief survey of the field, and, on the other, it also represents a pilot experimental research into tourism demand cycles in the Croatia, the purpose of which was to identify cycles in the fluctuation of the total number of inbound tourist overnight stays in Croatia by using the method of spectral analysis. Apart from the stated research this paper includes descriptions of the methods used for researching tourism demand by foreign scholars as well as a historical survey of the development of macroeconomic theory and methodology of business cycles, from which research of tourism demand cycles has developed. It can be regarded as a self-contained starting point for future research of any researcher into Croatian tourism demand cycles.
