Abstract: The article discusses the current problems of poverty and famine in developing countries, ways and means of overcoming these phenomena, and progressive economic models developed by the outstanding economist of our time i.e. Nobel laureate Amartya Kumar Sen, including the ones elaborated in cooperation with Jean Dreze. Amartya Kumar Sen criticized traditional economic assumptions, and aspired to build a more realistic economic science based on the concept of rights and human opportunities; he also gave practical recommendations to combat the problems. A. Sen proved that hunger is associated with inequality of food distribution caused by economic and social factors and emphasized the importance of public administration in the fight against hunger and chronic poverty. Amartya Kumar Sen developed an approach to opportunities that shifted the focus to areas previously considered irrelevant and recognized the existence of poverty in economically rich countries. The authors of the article describe and evaluate the degree of influence of Amartya Kumar Sen’s work on international politics in general, and the revision of the definition of food security.
